Sir Richard Branson has reached out to members of the public in a plea to help him find the owner of a lost ring. An unlucky passenger who was flying Virgin left behind their engagement ring at the airline's Melbourne lounge and Richard, 64, is on a mission to safely return it. The business tycoon retweeted a message from the company's official Twitter account, which read, "Have you flown with @VirginAustralia recently and lost your engagement ring? They might have it."

The Australia branch also sent out a similar post, writing, "Lost love <3 – Please RT to help us find the owner of an engagement ring lost in our Melbourne Lounge." So far no one has claimed the piece of jewellery which was lost about a month ago, leading the company to take to social media.

"We're hoping that one of our many Twitter followers knows the owner of the ring and are encouraging everyone to retweet us today to help spread the word."

No photo accompanied the post, presumably in a bid to prevent people claiming the ring as theirs. Virgin added that they would be asking people who come forward when exactly they had lost their ring and checking whether they had been in the lounge. This is not the first time that Richard has been on the hunt to reunite a lost ring with its owner. The London-born magnate recently surprised French tennis ace Marion Bartoli when he presented her with a ring she had misplaced over a year ago on his private Necker Island. In true Richard style, the accomplished entrepreneur – who is married to Joan Templeman – "proposed" to Marion with the lost jewel that she had received after winning Wimbledon 2013.

"My wife has given me permission to have a second wife," joked Richard, standing in front of a group of friends. "I know that she's already got a boyfriend but I just want to propose to her. You have to come forward, Marion, you." "Oh my God, what is it?" said a shocked Marion. "I'm proposing," said Richard, to which the French star replied, "What are you proposing? Ah you found my ring, you found my ring!" as he pulled out the gold jewel.
