Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley might have moved a step closer in her campaign to assure the right to British residency for Gurkha soliders this week, but she has no intention of resting on her laurels.
Having celebrated this week's decision by MPs to limit new laws only allowing Gurkhas with 20 years service to reside in Britain, the 62-year-old actress is to petition the Queen to make Nepal a member of the Commonwealth.
Joanna, whose father's life was saved by a Nepalese soldier during WWII, is fighting for all Gurkhas to be granted the same settlement rights as other troops who lay their lives on the line for Britain.
"The Gurkhas are the only members of the Armed Forces not in the Commonwealth," she explains. "If Nepal was made an honorary member, that would make them Commonwealth soldiers."
At the moment only those who served in the British Army after 1997 are allowed to settle in the UK
