Joan Collins and Elaine Paige among guests at Bugsy Malone launch

Friday May 1, 2015

The stars of stage and film turned out on Tuesday for the opening night of Bugsy Malone at the Lyric Hammersmith, directed by Olivier award winner Sean Holmes. Joan Collins and Elaine Paige both attended the special evening, which also saw the Lyric re-open its doors following a multi-million pound redevelopment.

It is the first professional production of Bugsy Malone in over a decade, and the evening saw Sir Alan Parker, the director of the 1976 film, who also adapted the story for the stage, walk the red carpet as well.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Sir Alan said: "This is magnificent. I’ve never liked theatrical productions before but this is in a stratosphere somewhere else.

"No one realises how hard it is - much harder than doing a totally adult piece. But there are so many talented kids here. I think my agent should sign everybody."

Joining the stage royalty at the event were stars including Romola Garai, former S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt, Gaby Roslin, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mel Giedroyc, and Camilla Al Fayed.

Bugsy Malone will run until 1 August.
