Late Pope John Paul II beatified

Monday May 2, 2011

Pope Benedict XVI (pictured) beatified his predecessor - the late Pope John Paul II - in a ceremony in the Vatican city on Sunday.

The process is the first step in attaining full sainthood. According to church rules two miracles must occur to make the Pope eligible for the title of saint.

The miracle that sparked the beatification was due to a French nun who said she was suddenly cured of Parkinson's disease through John Paul's intercession shortly after his death.

It was the Roman Catholic Church's fastest beatification in modern times - just six years after John Paul died and a few days ahead of the record set by Mother Theresa.
