Rio de Janeiro wins the race to host the 2016 Olympics

Friday October 2, 2009

Rio de Janeiro has been chosen as the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games

On Friday members of the International Olympic Committee voted in Copenhagen to choose where the summer games will be held and the Brazilian city came out on top.

Surprisingly favourite Chicago – which was lobbied by both President and Michelle Obama – was eliminated in the first round of voting, followed by Tokyo.

The final decision was between Rio de Janeiro and Madrid.

It is the first time that South America has been awarded the Games.

An estimated TV audience of one billion people tuned in to watch the decision.
