Maria Schneider – the French actress best known for playing Marlon Brando's lover in Last Tango in Paris – has died aged 58.
She had been suffering from a long illness and passed away in her home city of Paris.
Maria was just 19 when she was cast in Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial 1972 film.
She starred as a young Parisian woman named Jeanne who begins a highly sexually relationship with a middle-aged American businessman.
The film was banned in a number of countries because of its explicit nature.
Throughout her career, Maria appeared in more than two dozen films – most of them French.
Her last movie, The Key, was released in 2007.
