The Queen and Prince Philip will visit Rome on Thursday 3 April this year, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.
"Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are visiting at the invitation of the President of Italy, President Napolitano” the spokesperson said.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are having a private lunch with President Giorgio Napolitano followed by a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
According to BBC’s royal correspondent Peter Hunt “the Queen’s relaxed meeting with the pope will be at his resident” and he revealed that “she will not be wearing black or a vail”.
The trip was originally scheduled for last year, but had to be postponed due to illness.
