'Police Academy' star Bubba Smith dies at 66

Thursday August 4, 2011

Police Academy actor Bubba Smith has been found dead at his home in Los Angeles.

Although the cause of death is not yet known, police do not believe the circumstances were suspicious.

Bubba, a former American football star, spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts and two seasons each with Oakland and Houston.

But the 6ft 7in player had a second career as an actor.

He was best known for his role as softly-spoken police officer Moses Hightower in the Police Academy films.

Bubba also made appearances on TV shows like Good Times, Charlie's Angels, and Half Nelson

And he was a familiar face from the ground-breaking Miller Lite commercials featuring retired American football players.

Michigan State teammate Robert Viney has said: "He was simply a good guy.

"His size made him an intimidating figure, but he was a real gentleman. He was a helluva player."
