Party leaders and wives cast votes in historic election

Thursday May 6, 2010

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his two main rivals joined the millions of UK voters heading to the polls on Thursday morning to submit their choices.

Mr Brown and his wife Sarah were all smiles as they arrived at the North Queensferry Community Centre, their constituency's polling station.

Meanwhile, Conservative leader David Cameron did the same in Spelsbury with his pregnant wife Samantha by his side, as did Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and wife Miriam, who this morning stopped by a polling station in Sheffield.

The Lib Dem leader's spouse is unable to vote in the general election because she is a Spanish citizen.

Voting ends at 10pm in what promises to be one of the closest UK elections in recent history.
