British Critic's Choice contenders revealed

Thursday December 6, 2012

Three acts have been announced as prime contenders for the Critic's Choice award.

Laura Mvula, Tom Odell and AlunaGeorge will be competing for the newcomer crown in the 2013 awards, hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous victors Adele, Jessie J and Emeli Sandé.

Classically trained singer Laura, who has recently released her first EP She, began her career writing songs on her laptop whilst working as a supply teacher at a Birmingham primary school. Wowing the crowds after recently supporting Gary Barlow, the singer created her upcoming debut album with Tom Elmhirst, who has had Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and Adele on his books.

Thrilled to be nominated, the singer said: "It's unbelievable and I'm in total shock. I don't think I've experienced this kind of shock before. It's such a huge honour to be included in this prestigious shortlist, I don't think that I can put it in to words. Thank you."

Tom, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter who studied at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, started songwriting as a teenager and made his TV debut on Later ... With Jools Holland last month.

AlunaGeorge are composed producer George Reid and singer Aluna Francis, whose brand of soulful electronica has been hotly tipped for success.

Handpicked by music insider, the winner will be announced on Thursday December 20.
