Duchess of Alba, 85, gives away fortune to marry

Tuesday August 9, 2011

Spain's best known aristocrat has divided her vast wealth between her six children to win them round to her third marriage.

Now in her 80s, the fabulously wealthy Duchess of Alba is planning to marry Alfonso Diez Carabantes, who is 24 years her junior.

She is thought to be worth between 600m and 3.5bn euros (£524m and £3bn) and owns sprawling properties in Ibiza, Seville and Madrid.

Her son Carlos will inherit Liria Palace in Madrid and the Monterrey Palace in Salamanca.

Meanwhile, his son has been given Las Duenas in Seville.

The colourful noblewoman grew close to Alfonso, a civil servant, after the death of her second husband, who was once a Jesuit priest.

When she married for the first time in 1947, the lavish nuptials threatened to overshadow those of the Queen.
