Just three days after undergoing surgery, King Juan Carlos of Spain has been discharged from hospital in Barcelona.
The 72-year-old monarch has recovered rapidly from his operation to remove a benign tumour from his right lung on Saturday.
Accompanied by the medical team who looked after him, the sovereign left the Hospital Clinico de Barcelona at 3.15pm on Tuesday on foot, pausing to offer at few remarks to the assembled press.
As well as thanking his doctors and "all the people who looked after him", the king also expressed his thanks to the press for its reporting of his operation.
He will now continue his convalescence in Madrid and gradually resume his official duties in the coming weeks.
