Screen star Dixie Carter, who received an Emmy nomination for her guest role in Desperate Housewives, has died at the age of 70.
The actress' publicist has revealed she died in Houston after complications stemming from endometrial cancer.
She played the devious mother-in-law of Marcia Cross' character, Bree Hodge, in the US series. She also had a star role in TV drama Designing Women, which ran from 1986 to 1993.
"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her actor husband Hal Holbrook said in a written statement.
"We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy."
