Princess brings Japanese tradition to ancient Austrian abbey

Tuesday May 12, 2009

Prince Akishino's wife Princess Kiko brought the historic tradition of one nation to another this week as she visited one of Austria's most treasured buildings from the Middle Ages, a 900-year-old abbey close to Vienna, in a beautiful peach kimono.

The 42-year-old princess and her husband - who is the younger son of Japanese Emperor Akihito  -  were shown around Klosterneuburg Abbey, which houses some of the best preserved artwork of the period and is a resting place for the saint who founded it.

Prince Akishino, 43, and Princess Kiko are currently on a two-week tour of central and eastern Europe to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Japan establishing diplomatic relations with Austria and Hungary. As well as those two countries they will also visit Bulgaria and Romania.
