Since the infamous telephone assault in 2005, Russell Crowe has generally stayed out of trouble.
This weekend, however, the Gladiator star's comments on Twitter involving friend and successful Hollywood director, Eli Roth, once again brought him into the spotlight.
In response to a fan's question regarding circumcision Russell is reported to have tweeted that circumcision is "barbaric and stupid".
Another post began with "I love my Jewish friends" but "remain of the opinion that circumcision is an unnatural practice".
While he claims the posts were in good humour, many of his followers on the micro-blogging site didn't see the funny side.
The A-list star, accused of anti-Semitism, later replaced the posts with several apologetic ones.
"I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities, I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress."
Eli insists that Russel meant no harm: "[we] are great friends, and often tease each other publicly."
"I am deeply, deeply disturbed with the media's portrayal of Russell Crowe as an anti-Semite for making me a joke on Twitter."
The Man With the Iron Fists, a $20 million project the pair have been working on, is due for release later this year.
