Coronation Street actress Maggie Jones has been written out of the soap for the forseeable future.
Scriptwriters made the decision to write her character out after the veteran actress was admitted to hospital for a major operation.
The 75-year-old - who has played sharp-tongued battleaxe Blanche Hunt for ten years - does not want the nature of her illness disclosed but friends say she is "quite poorly".
"We are all hoping and wishing the best for Maggie, who is much loved by everyone at Coronation Street," a spokesperson for the show says.
Maggie's operation comes six months after she was previously written out of the soap for several weeks following a fall in which she hurt her knee and shoulder.
