If anyone was up to the challenge of taking on an Olympian athlete, Melanie Chisholm – aka Sporty Spice – was the woman for the job.
Mel went head-to-head with cycling champion Victoria Pendleton – each leading their own relay team - in a Women Only Triathlon at Dorney Lake, near Windsor, at the weekend.
However, despite her team's valiant efforts, Mel's group was beaten into second place at the event, which aimed to encourage greater female participation in sport and featured 1,000 other female competitors chosen from all over the UK.
"I set myself a bit of a challenge trying to beat a multiple Olympic Gold Medallist," admitted 40-year-old Mel, who did phenomenally well in coming so close against 34-year-old Victoria.
Despite not completing the 21.2km bike leg of the race, Victoria still managed to pip Mel to the post in the 5km run after Team Melanie had initially led in the 400m swim, and the race ended with just 1 minute 12 seconds between the two teams.
The competition was set up by Human Race, the UK's largest organiser of cycling, triathlon, running and swimming events.
