In a surprise announcement, Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter, Bristol, has confirmed her engagement to ex-fiancé and father of her baby, Levi Johnston.
The couple split in 2008 two weeks after their son, Tripp, was born.
After the break-up, Levi sparked controversy by posing for Playgirl magazine and publicly criticising the former Alaskan governer and her family.
A war of words followed between Sarah and the former high school hockey player with public jabs and accusations becoming commonplace.
Bristol and Levi reunited while arranging a custody agreement for their son.
They became engaged shortly afterwards and say they want to get married as soon as possible.
The announcement in a US magazine was the first Sarah had heard about the reconciliation.
"We obviously want what's best for our children," said the politician.
"Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives."
Asked about her mother’s approval, 19-year-old Bristol said: “Hopefully she will jump on board”.
