Until now there have been no serious British contenders for Carla Bruni-Sarkozy's crown as the queen of understated glamour.
That was before Samantha Cameron took up residence in Downing Street.
On Monday evening the Prime Minister's wife showcased her style in an elegant black ensemble for the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London.
Accompanying her white-tie clad husband David, the 39-year-old wore a short-sleeved tailored top by her friend and favourite designer, Emilia Wickstead.
It was teamed with a vintage Jean Muir skirt.
The finishing touch was a statement gold necklace by British jeweller Mawi.
And showing Samantha can mix High Street with designer styles, the shoes were platform boots from Next.
Her look was a triumph for a woman, who combines a role as a creative consultant for luxury stationer Smythson with caring for three small children, including baby Florence, born at the end of August.
