A top PR professional who helped revamp the image of the monarchy following Princess Diana's death, has been recruited by Number 10.
Simon Lewis has become the official spokesperson for Gordon Brown, a role most closely identified with Alistair Campbell, who occupied the same job under Tony Blair.
Buckingham Palace communications secretary Mr Lewis played a leading role in setting up a group, chaired by the Duke of Edinburgh, aimed at changing public perception of the royals.
It was during his two-year tenure with the Palace that stories emerged in the press of the Queen taking tea in council flats with her subjects and using scheduled trains.
