There has been mounting speculation that the Obamas were to receive an invitation to the royal wedding, on April 29.
However, Buckingham Palace has now confirmed the US president and his wife will travel to the UK for a state visit in May.
This closeness of the dates indicates that they will probably not be guests at the highly anticipated nuptials.
The White House says the three-day trip, to take place from May 24 to May 26, will illustrate "the strength of the special relationship between our two countries."
It will be the first state visit by an American president in over seven years.
The couple travelled to Buckingham Palace two years ago while in London for a G8 meeting, but it was not a state affair.
Michelle and the Queen are reportedly on very friendly terms.
Following the reception for world leaders in 2009 the first lady famously departed from protocol and put her arm around the monarch.
