Security has been stepped up in Buckingham Palace because visitors can get within 8ft of the exquisite dress to see the needlework up close.
They were shown round by Royal Collection curator Caroline de Guitaut.
She said: "The dress performed perfectly.
"But the Duke and Duchess also maintained a modesty that gave the event the feel of a big family wedding to which the nation was invited."
