Pope Benedict XVI has written to the Queen to accept her invitation to visit the UK next year.
The highly-anticipated trip will mark only the second visit by a pontiff to the British Isles in almost 30 years.
Due to take place in autumn 2010, the tour will take in of some of Britain's largest cities including London, Birmingham, Oxford and Edinburgh.
The Pope is expected to receive huge crowds reminiscent of those drawn by the late John Paul II in 1982.
His schedule is thought to include a lecture at Oxford University, talks at the Houses of Parliament and an overnight stay in Buckingham Palace.
