Billy Crystal's musical number sets tone for Oscars

Monday February 27, 2012

Billy Crystal got the Oscars off to a swinging start as he burst onstage riding a filmstrip and singing about the films that were up for Best Picture.

"We're here at the beautiful Chapter 11 theatre!" he announced before quipping that "nothing can take the sting out of our economic worries more than millionaires presenting themselves with little gold statues."

The nine-time Oscar host also appeared in send-ups of the nights big films, in hilarious sketches which saw him meet singer Justin Bieber and receive the kiss of life from George Clooney.

His set was a hark back to a to old-style razzle-dazzle of ceremonies past.

Nine-time host Billy last presented the show in 2004 and was this year chosen to replace original compere Eddie Murphy at the last minute.
