Prince William was part of a dramatic rescue mission to save Russian sailors after their cargo-laden ship sank in severe weather conditions.
Flight Lieutenant Wales – as William is known in the Royal Air Force – co-piloted the Sea King rescue helicopter that saved two men’s lives.
Despite the intervention, one man died and five more remain missing.
The Duke of Cambridge was called into action early on Sunday morning in the mission which lasted for several hours.
After the initial search with the Prince at the helm was called off, other colleagues took over the search for the five men who remain stranded at sea.
The drama comes just weeks after the Ministry of Defence announced the details of the royal helicopter pilot's deployment to the Falklands early next year.
