Brigitte Bardot appeals to birthday 'twin' Sofia Loren to cut out fur

Tuesday September 29, 2009

As well as being icons of their generation, Brigitte Bardot and Sofia Loren also share something else in common - their birthdays fall just eight days apart.

So on the occasion of her 75th on Monday, former French siren-turned-animal-rights-activist Brigitte took the opportunity to reach out to her "twin" Sofia to urge her to stop wearing fur.

"I wish a happy birthday to Sofia Loren, my splendid twin," the actress said of the Naples-born beauty, who turned 75 on September 20, in a recent written interview.

"And I ask her to stop wearing fur – that is the best gift she could offer me."

Both actresses took the Fifties by storm, becoming symbolic of the sexual liberation of the western world.

But Brigitte abandoned her silver screen career to concentrate on crusading for animal rights.

The pair clashed in the mid-1990s when the blonde star wrote to Sofia about adverts in which she had modelled fur coats.
