Maeve Binchy, author of romantic dramas such as The Lilac Bus, Tara Road and Circle of Friends, has died aged 72 after suffering a short illness.
The best-selling author, who wrote her first novel alongside her day job as a journalist at The Irish Times, spoke about her perseverence at first getting published.
"It's like if you don't go to a dance you can never be rejected but you'll never get to dance either," she said.
In 2010 Maeve won a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Book Awards and posted a personal message of thanks to her fans on her website.
She said: "My health isn't so good these days and I can't travel around to meet people the way I used to.
"But I'm always delighted to hear from readers, even if it takes me a while to reply."
Maeve leaves behind her husband, writer Gordon Snell.
