A celebrity mother-of-three whose talent has earned her a 650-million fortune has been named the UK's most powerful woman.

The mind behind Harry Potter, 39-year-old author JK Rowling, has topped the list compiled by Forbes magazine, unseating the woman who held the spot last year, the Prime Minister's wife Cherie Blair.

JK, who was at number 85 on the overall roster of the world's 100 most powerful women last year, has moved up to 40th place, while Mrs Blair has fallen to 62nd. The other famous British figure on the list is the Queen, who came in at number 75.

The Forbes gauge, described as a "composite of visibility, measured by press citations, and economic impact", has determined the most powerful female in the world is US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The stateswoman's key role in the Bush administration along with her "steely nerve and delicate manners" put her in the top spot.
