US African-American stars came together at a glittering gala this week to honour the man who wrote the rule book on creating a name for yourself - Muhammad Ali.

Looking frail but still radiating charisma, the legendary boxer was the guest of honour at a Los Angeles awards ceremony hosted by Halle Berry.

Before a celebrity audience, which included Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Stevie Wonder and Will Smith, the American champion received a lifetime achievement accolade from the US' oldest civil rights organisation, NAACP. The presentation of the honour, known as the President's Award, was timed to coincide with NAACP's 100th anniversary.

Compere Halle provided a glamorous focus with a total of four dazzling costume changes, while musical performances came from divas Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Knowles, who was named best female artist.

Former American Idol talent show winner Jennifer also accepted two awards, including one for her drama The Secret Life Of Bees.

"This is where we come from", she said from the podium. "So it's always an honour to come home and feel welcome and to feel the love. I really cherish this and appreciate it."
