So in his last year as the Doctor, it was entirely fitting that he was awarded with the coveted outstanding drama performance trophy once again.
The 38-year-old actor appeared on stage twice at Wednesday's star-studded ceremony; once to pick up his individual award and again to help accept a gong on behalf of the sci-fi show, which was named best drama.
David was not the only star maintaining a winning streak.
Comedy duo Ant and Dec had plenty to celebrate after scooping two awards – most popular entertainment presenters and best entertainment programme for Saturday Night Takeaway.
While their wins would not have come as a surprise to their fans, the pair were considerably shocked by their continuing success.
"In a car on the way here we said the winning streak's got to end soon and thought it would be tonight, we really did," revealed Ant.
Gavin and Stacey was named best comedy programme at the ceremony – held in London's O2 – while the outstanding serial drama performance was awarded to EastEnders actress Lacey Turner.
In the battle of the soaps, Coronation Street emerged triumphant, winning best serial drama and the most popular newcomer trophy, which went to Craig Gazey.
The X Factor beat stiff competition from Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing on Ice and Britain's Got Talent, to be named most popular talent show.
And there was a treat in store for its many fans – controversial finalists John and Edward, aka Jedward, made a special appearance in the second half of the show singing Ice Ice Baby, joined by none other than US rapper Vanilla Ice.
TV royalty Stephen Fry was the recipient of this year's special contribution award.
And appropriately leading the tributes to the hugely popular QI host – whose show Stephen Fry in America also won most popular travel documentary - was Britain's future king, Prince Charles.
Appearing on a video screen on stage, the prince told a visibly moved Stephen: "I am thrilled that you are receiving this award tonight in recognition of all that you have done, and continue to do.
"Thank you, thank you for enhancing our lives and for becoming a national treasure."
