It's something of an understatement to say that the past nine months have been difficult for Elin Nordegren. As one friend puts it: "She's been through hell but handled herself with such dignity."
As the news broke of their finalisation of their divorce, Elin released a joint statement with Tiger Woods which served as an affirmation of the incredibly level-headed way she has continued to conduct herself.
"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," read the statement.
"While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us.
"Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future wellbeing.
"The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern."
Both Elin and Tiger have attended the standard four-hour parenting class required to finalise any divorce in Florida. They have two children – Sam, three, and 18-month-old Charlie.
Elin is also said to have accompanied her husband to counselling sessions in recent months.
She will also legally revert back to her full maiden name: Elin Maria Pernilla Nordegren. And according to her friends, the former model – who recently enrolled in psychology classes at Rollins College in Florida - is looking to the future.
"She's feeling okay about all this," says one. "And now she's got a whole new life ahead of her."
