Speaking exclusively to HELLO! magazine, TV presenter and former Atomic Kitten Jenny Frost, 32, sheds a few tears as she remembers setting her wedding date just months ago.
Following her break-up with ex-fiancé Dominic Thrupp after an 11-year relationship and the death of her beloved mother, the newly single mum of Caspar, almost three, has changed her plans immeasurably - she is moving back to her hometown of Manchester following what she calls her "darkest time ever".
"This year has been the most difficult period of my life," she says. “Having got through it, I feel kind of bulletproof. That’s not to say I can get over the loss of my mum. I never stop thinking of her."
"She was only 60; she had never smoked in her life, but she still got lung cancer. The cancer was found quite late – and, typically for her, she never told us how serious it was."
Following her mother’s sudden death, Jenny’s grief led her to the realisation that she was in the wrong relationship.
"Dom is a good man and he is going to make someone an excellent husband – just not me," she says. "I realised I want more. I think the break-up would have happened eventually, but I went to see a grief counsellor.
"I just poured emotion out and spilled all that I’d kept bottled up for so long. Then, the cloud just cleared. I saw where my life should be for the first time and that I needed to move on and just be with Caspar."
"We are just too different," she adds. "The old saying about opposites attracting was true for us. But as time went on we both needed someone who wants the same things in life."
Despite her difficulties, Jenny has found a positive side to her year from hell. "It took me a long time to come out of my little hole," she admits.
"Finally I gave myself a mental upper cut and told myself to take some help from friends who love me... I’ve come out on the other side, revitalised."
