But now it's emerged the A-list couple were also nursing a happy secret - they were soon to become parents for the second time with the help of a surrogate mother. The pair have been keeping the birth of Faith Margaret Kidman Urban a secret since last month. They are the biological parents of the little girl, who was born on December 28, near their home in Nashville. On Monday, the duo – who are also parents to two-year-old Sunday Rose – were finally ready to share their joy. "Our family is truly blessed and just so thankful to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret," they said in their statement. The proud parents also expressed their gratitude to "everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier". "We needed lots of faith, literally," said Nicole to explain the baby's name.

Margaret was chosen in honour of Nicole's grandmother - who welcomed her last child aged 49. "As an older mother I wanted to pay tribute to her," she explained. There was a clue as to Nicole's big announcement at the Golden Globes at the weekend when she told a Daily Mail journalist she was planning to take some time off work. "I'm going to take a long break, a complete break away from work to concentrate totally on all things relating to the family. It's a clear six months off," said the 43-year-old. The Oscar winner is also mother to two teenage children – Isabella, 18, and Conor, 15 (pictured above) - whom she adopted while married to Tom Cruise.

She revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage early on in her first marriage and had lost a baby at three months, shortly before she split with Tom in 2000. Nicole and Keith are just one of many celebrity couples to deliver a baby via a surrogate recently. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderik welcomed their twin daughters Tabitha and Marion by this method, as did Elton John and David Furnish. Their son Zachary arrived on Christmas Day 2010.
