The end of Halle Berry's long-term romance with Gabriel Aubry in April came as a shock to celebrity watchers.
Many had assumed that this golden Hollywood couple – who welcomed a daughter together in March 2008 – would go the distance in an industry not known for its enduring relationships.
It all seemed to be very amicable. Both parties pledged their commitment to little Nahla, with friends confirming they would "co-parent" and "be in each other's lives forever."
And it wasn't long before the former couple were enjoying family days out with their little girl and trips abroad together to ensure Gabriel stayed close to his daughter while Halle fulfilled work commitments – she is now dating her Dark Tide co-star Olivier Martinez.
That amicability has apparently come to an end.
At the end of January 2011 – and ostensibly out of the blue – Halle announced that she was preparing to fight her ex in court over the custody of their daughter, who turns three in March.
In a statement released by her representative, the 44-year-old said she "had serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time", adding that she was "prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her".
She also claimed to have "attempted to resolve these custody issues amicably" with Gabriel, 34, but that "given his lack of cooperation" had "no choice but to seek swift judicial intervention".
While it is not known what prompted Halle's actions, Gabriel did file court papers on December 30 seeking to be formally recognised as Nahla's father and also to establish shared custody.
In preparation for the custody battle, the Monster's Ball star has pulled out of a role in upcoming romcom New Year's Eve, scheduled to shoot in New York this week. She will reportedly be replaced by Katherine Heigl.
"Halle has always made the needs and safety of her daughter her first priority," the actress' rep added. "And, both while Halle and Gabriel were a couple and since their break-up, Halle has only acted in her daughter's best interest."
So far there has been no comment from her Canadian model ex.
