News of the engagement is a happy development for the couple who got together while filming their movie Wanderlust.
The pair were recently spotted looking more in love than ever during a romantic anniversary trip to Paris.
Since meeting Justin, 43-year-old Jennifer has consistently spoken of how content her partner makes her, saying she was in a "joyful and peaceful" place.
By consolidating their relationship, the actress will finally dispel the myth that there is bad feeling between her ex-husband Brad Pitt and his partner Angelina Jolie, themselves rumoured to be planning nuptials at their French chateau.
Recently asked what the biggest misconception about her is, America's darling replied: "The triangle with my ex-husband – and that there's a feud there."
"It's constant. It's a story headline that won't go away, but it's a money thing", she added, before concluding that the story "has nothing to do with reality".
Reality centres firmly around the brooding Mr Theroux, who made his name as an actor with small parts in shows like Sex and the City before landing meatier roles in the films American Psycho and Mulholland Drive.
He also has cool Indie roots, being part of the Theroux clan – as the nephew of the travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, and the cousin of quirky TV presenter Louis, famous for his compelling documentaries.
Soon, Justin will add the title of loving husband to Hollywood's sweetheart to his list of credentials.
