Liam Hemsworth, 23, is enjoying a solo holiday in his native Australia while persistent split rumours continue to cast doubt over his engagement with Miley Cyrus, 20.
Hunger Games actor Liam was spotted enjoying the surf in Sydney with a male friend. He looked relaxed and happy although Miley, who is currently based in Los Angeles, was nowhere to be seen.
The young couple's relationship has attracted a lot of attention recently and it was suggested Miley had decided to end her engagement to Liam, following reports he had a night out with January Jones at a pre-Oscars party at Hollywood's Chateau Marmont.
A source told People magazine: "Liam did fly home to Australia so they could have a break. He has been spending time with his brother Chris, with whom he is very close."
"Miley is still upset with Liam. She took her engagement ring off to make him mad. But, it doesn't mean that they have split. Miley says they are still together.
"She is crazy about Liam, but sometimes doesn't treat him great. She likes things her way and tends to play games. Liam is also a strong person and that's why they often butt heads."
While Liam takes some time out, Miley has been defending their relationship on Twitter. "I am so sick of LA. And sick of the lies that come with it," she wrote. "I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media #draining."
Miley and Liam announced their engagement in June 2012 after three years of dating. The former Disney star met the handsome Aussie on the set of their 2009 film, The Last Song.
In the past she described him as "her first serious boyfriend" after romances with Nick Jonas and model Justin Gaston.
