Andrew made the unusual decision to name the X Factor boss as a co-respondent in the papers he filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court two weeks ago, citing adultery as the reason for ending the marriage.
It means that Simon, 53, could be called to the witness stand to reveal information about his personal wealth, estimated to be in the region of £225 million, and possibly details about his relationship with Lauren.
“It’s really a signal to the spouse who cheated that the wronged spouse is very angry and that it’s going to be a very nasty, scorched-earth, high-profile litigation,” divorce attorney Martha Cohen Stine told the New York Post.
Meanwhile, Andrew’s brother Alexander told the newspaper that Lauren’s pregnancy did constitute a breach of trust by Simon.
“It’s an unbelievable story of betrayal,” he said. “It is a sad story and a tragic story.”
Despite reports that the Silvermans had been unhappy in their marriage for some time, a friend of Lauren’s also confirmed to the Post that they “weren’t estranged”.
“The suggestion that she was an estranged wife who fell into another man’s arms is not the case.”
On Wednesday evening, Simon was pictured for the first time since the news broke, as he left the X Factor USA studios in Los Angeles. So far he has remained silent on reports that Lauren, 36, is carrying his first child, due next February.
Friends and family have seemingly confirmed the news, however. Rosy Davis, the wife of Lauren’s father Steven, told the Mail, “We are all excited for the baby. It’s beautiful. We feel blessed.”
Simon’s mum Julie, meanwhile, told the Sun, “I’ve not heard anything officially. But if it’s true then I’m absolutely delighted. It’s wonderful! He’ll make a fantastic father. He’ll be great.”
Simon is believed to have met Lauren and her husband while on vacation in Barbados seven years ago. They holidayed together on a number of occasions, during Simon’s relationship with Terri Seymour and later Mezghan Hussainy.
Lauren and her husband have a seven-year-old son together, Adam. It is not known whether Andrew filed the legal papers after learning of his wife’s pregnancy.
Meanwhile stars have been taking to Twitter to congratulate the music mogul on the news of his impending fatherhood. His ex-girlfriend Sinitta seemed to be one of the first to hear the news, leaving a cryptic message two days before it became public knowledge.
“Something has just happened … half miracle, half nightmare! #WakeMeUpIWantToGetOff!!,” she wrote.
One person who was quick to voice their excitement was Simon’s fellow Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams. The comedian – whose wife Lara Stone welcomed their baby boy Alfred in May – joked, “For the record @SimonCowell and I tried to have a baby together for many years. But I just couldn’t get pregnant.”
