In an article written for Harper's Bazaar the Holiday singer described how she was threatened and victimised at the age of just 20.
"New York wasn't everything I thought it would be," wrote Madonna. "It did not welcome me with open arms."
"The first year, I was held up at gunpoint," she added. "Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back."
Madonna also revealed that despite owning little valuable property at the time her apartment was repeatedly broken into.
"I had my apartment broken into three times," she wrote. "I don't know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time."
"I felt like a warrior plunging my way through the crowds to survive," concluded the Michigan-born star of her first years in America's most populated city.
