Imagine, if at the start of every movie they made an announcement. 'Ladies and gentlemen. This is the hero, this is the heroine. At the end of the film, he or she will succeed/fail/die/learn a big lesson. Well, you get the idea. There are some things we don't want to know too much about in advance. The fun is in the finding out. I'm torn about what to tell you to expect in your emotional life soon. I don't want to rob you of a sense of challenge but let's put it this way, if you want some reassurance... you can have some!
Born in Burnley, Lancashire, on 25 May 1939, Sir Ian's acting career was sparked by an early fascination with the theatre after his parents took him to see Peter Pan at the Opera House in Manchester when he was three.
At the age of 18, having won a scholarship to study English Literature at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, Ian joined The Marlowe Society and landed parts in Cymbeline and Henry IV alongside Sir Trevor Nunn and Sir Derek Jacobi.
Sir Ian gained his first film role in 1979, at the age of 30, later becoming well-loved for starring as Gandlaf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Magneto in X-Men.
Since publicly coming out as gay on a BBC Radio 3 programme in 1988, Sir Ian has supported numerous Gay Pride events around the UK and is the co-founder of Stonewall, an LGBT rights lobby group.
