Ahead of the game, Ashton shared a selfie showing him smiling alongside a friend, who was dressed in patriotic yellow and green. Wisely, in hindsight, Ashton chose not to show his allegiance and was dressed in neutral colours.
"WorldCup2014," Ashton, 36, captioned the snapshot, captured moments before the match got underway.
Understandably absent on the night was the star's pregnant fiancée Mila Kunis. The actress was no doubt resting back at home in LA following the couple's visit to Italy at the weekend to celebrate the wedding of Google's Nikesh Aror and entrepreneur Ayesha Thapar.

Monday's shocking World Cup clash in the city of Belo Horizonte was watched by millions around the world, including Brazil's supermodel supporters Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima.
The two Victoria's Secret stars got into their yellow and green jerseys to cheer on their team at Miss Lily's bar In New York's East Village.
Adriana proudly sported her top, which had the number two and name 'Lims' on the back, while Alessandra's read 'Ale' under the number ten. The pair were also joined by fellow model Lily Aldridge to watch the nail-biting game and shared a number of photos throughout the day.

But, for all their support, the stars were left bitterly disappointed by the time the final whistle went – unlike Heidi Klum.
