Coldplay may have been billed as the headline act at Sunday's Super Bowl 50 half-time performance, but it was Beyoncé who stole the show. The 34-year-old wowed the crowd with a performance of her single Formation, just 24-hours after surprising fans by releasing the new track.

Dressed in a skin-tight leather ensemble and fishnet tights, the Diva singer appeared to put recent pregnancy rumours to rest as she took over the field with her posse of female backing dancers. After performing a perfectly synchronised routine to her new single, Beyoncé marched onto the stage to join fellow performer Bruno Mars for a dance-off to his number one hit Uptown Funk.

Chris Martin joined the performance at the end, before rounding off the 12-minute set with Coldplay's Fix You, while video clips from former Super Bowl half-time sets played on screen. With artists including Whitney Houston, James Brown and Michael Jackson having performed at the Super Bowl before, Coldplay were following in the footsteps of some musical greats, and gave it their all as they performed three of their biggest hits – Viva La Vida, Paradise and Adventure of a Lifetime.

The band were clearly pleased with their performance and shared a number of photos from the performance on social media – including a snap taken of the crowd holding up colourful cards that spelled out the words "Believe in Love". Another showed Chris with Bruno and Beyoncé along with the caption: "Bruno and Beyoncé and all your teams. Thank you. We love you so much. Love Coldplay."

Chris had explained that Coldplay's headlining set would represent the past, present and future, and joked about how they would fit in all their hits in just 12 minutes. "We decided to play all our no. 1s and then work out how to fill the other 10 minutes," he said at a press conference ahead of the game.

He then reiterated his love for Beyoncé, who headlined at the 2013 Super Bowl. "We love Beyoncé’s music. She's one of our all-time favourites, and she's one of the greatest performers I've ever witnessed," he said.
