Russell Crowe revealed the moment he knew Ryan Gosling would be a great dad

"She had very little experience, but a fine intellect and a real enthusiasm for the craft, so it was great," Russell explained during a press conference for The Nice Guys in London. "The thing is, to get her to that place of comfort, apart from the work that Shane did with her, Ryan put a lot of effort into that."

Russell admitted that he himself praised Ryan, who welcomed his second child with Eva Mendes in April, and told him why he believed that he was set to be a great father.

"A few days ago we were just having a chat and I said to him, 'I just knew you were going to be a great dad when I saw you do that,' because he took the time and he was gentle with her and open," Russell explained.

The highly-anticipated film sees the pair starring as two detectives in 1970s Los Angeles who search for a missing girl, but in the process begin to uncover a shocking conspiracy.

Joined at the conference by Matt Bomer, producer Joel Silver and director Shane Black, the Gladiator star also opened up about his onscreen chemistry with Ryan, confessing that the father-of-two often had him in fits of laughter, causing him to "corpse" on camera – a term used by actors to describe when they laugh during a take.

"If you take the 26 years of making lead roles and feature films prior to The Nice Guys, the amount of times that I would have corpsed on camera, in that whole time, 49 feature films or whatever, would be less than any given week of shooting the Nice Guys," he said.

"Sometimes I would suspect that he was up all night trying to think of ways to make me laugh because he just has this natural comedic gift," he explained, adding later: "I laughed my head off all the time."
