Barack Obama might be the president of the United States, but he is also a dad – and, as he stated this week at his last Fourth of July party before leaving office, "It's the job of a father to embarrass his daughters."

On Monday, the US leader held a White House concert for military families in celebration of America's Independence Day - but he also put the spotlight on his elder daughter Malia, who coincidentally was celebrating her 18th birthday.

"Just because it's the job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I've got one last job," the president announced at the end of his speech. "It just so happens that we celebrate our country's birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter's birthday."

The proud 54-year-old then led the audience in a rendition of Happy Birthday to Malia, who later joined her dad on stage for a celebratory hug.

For the second year running, the White House was forced to abandon plans for a picnic on the South Lawn because of the rain, and the party was instead moved indoors.

Not that the weather dampened spirits. Guests were treated to performances by rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer Janelle Monae, and the night concluded with a spectacular fireworks display.

In his heartfelt address, President Obama paid tribute to the members of the armed forces. "We all know that our freedoms are dependent on an incredible group of men and women in uniform and their families who look out for us every single day.
