Barack Obama has written a sweet note to his wife Michelle as she celebrates her last birthday in the White House. The US President took to Twitter to declare his love and affection to his partner in crime, writing: "To the girl from the South Side who took on a role she didn't ask for and made it her own: Happy Birthday, Michelle. I love you."

Barack accompanied the post with a sweet picture of the couple taken in 2009 after the Midatlantic Regional Inaugural Ball in Washington. The politician had been sworn in as the 44th US President earlier in the day.

Michelle celebrated her 53rd birthday on Tuesday, most likely in private in the company of her husband and their two daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15.

The Obamas are preparing to move out of the White House ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday. They are set to relocate to a beautiful home in Washington D. C.

Last week, Barack addressed the US nation for the last time as president, again delivering a sweet message to his First Lady. Turning to his wife, he said: "Michelle – for the past 25 years, you've been not only my wife and mother of my children, but my best friend. You took on a role you didn't ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humour.

"You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody. And a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You've made me proud. You've made the country proud."

And turning the attention to his children, Barack hailed his daughters for growing up in the limelight with grace. He added: "Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances, you have become two amazing young women, smart and beautiful, but more importantly, kind and thoughtful and full of passion. You wore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I've done in my life, I'm most proud to be your dad."
