And despite setting a fun tone to proceedings, Mariah still made sure the evening unfolded at her own pace. Looking sensational in a beaded gold dress and matching cape, the mum-of-two strolled onstage half a minute after the music had fired up, with her collaborator Cee Lo Green left waiting for her perched on a throne.

Perhaps by way of explanation, the words 'fashionably late' flashed across one of the screens.  Once Ms Carey launched into her set, the crowd at the Rockefeller Centre went wild for her new single, Triumphant (Get 'Em). There was a change of musical and sartorial pace as Mariah changed into a little black number to perform her classic hit Touch My Body. It was a return to form for the singer, who has recently branched out her interests after signing an $18 million (£11.6 million) deal to be a judge on the latest series of American Idol. Whether on stage or in the hot seat, Mariah's main priority is always her cute little twins Monroe and Moroccan, and their father Nick Cannon.
