Michelle Keegan's 'Coronation Street' leads the nominations at the British Soap Awards

Coronation Street is ready to sweep the board at this year's British Soap Awards after being given 18 nominations in a wide range of categories, including best storyline and best British soap.One of the show's stars, Michelle Keegan, 25, also emerged as a front runner in the best actress category. She was also put forward for sexiest female.

There, the glamorous brunette – who is dating The Only Way Is Essex star Mark Wright  – faces stiff competition from fellow soap starlets.She will go up against her colleague Georgia May Foote, EastEnders' Jacqueline Jossa, Natalie Anderson from Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks beauty Jorgie Porter.Michelle, who has been named sexiest female four years in a row, will want to defend her title one last time.She has announced she will be leaving Coronation Street (whose cast is seen below) early next year.EastEnders was the other main soap named in the nominations, snapping at Corrie's heels with a total of 16 nods.

Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and daytime programme Doctors were also nominated in various categories.The British Soap Awards are an important date on the TV calendar, and every year the small screen's finest are recognised for their talents.Some of the main categories – including best actor, best actress and best soap – are chosen by viewers.Voting is now open on the Soap Awards' website and fans can see if their favourite star wins when the ceremony takes place on Friday 17 May.
