It wasn't just English football fans left heartbroken by Thursday's World Cup game – so too was Rihanna. The superstar singer was firmly flying the flag for England during the match against Uruguay, and provided her own commentary for fans on Twitter.

"ENGLAND whatchu gon do??!," she wrote, shortly after the team conceded their first goal of the game, before celebrating Wayne Rooney's equaliser with, "Roooonnnnnneeeeeyyyyy." As the game slipped away, Rihanna started to tweet her frustration. "Man they know better than to give Suarez that much room bruh!" she said, as the Uruguayan forward scored the winning goal, adding: "Uruguay defense is almost disrespectful!!! 2 good."

Rihanna wasn't the only celebrity cheering on England during Thursday's clash. Among those optimistically tweeting ahead of the game were One Direction star Liam Payne– "Come on England let's get behind the boys" – and Lewis Hamilton, who wrote in the second half, "Come on #England we can bring it back! "As the final whistle blew, some stars shared their disappointment. "Well I'm having a b***** drink!!!" wrote TV presenter Phillip Schofield. "Damn damn damn and damn again."

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, meanwhile, consoled herself with a tub of ice cream, posting a picture and writing: "Emergency ice cream #WorldCup."In the São Paulo stadium for the match were Wayne Rooney's family, including his wife Coleen Rooney and their sons Kai  and Klay. While they managed to see the football star score his first World Cup goal, they were clearly disappointed by the final result – especially four-year-old Kai, who was pictured with his head in his hands.

"Gutted with the score but so pleased @WayneRooney scored and his boys were here to see it!!" Coleen tweeted immediately after the match.
