Diver Tom Daley has helped boost Team GB's medal tally at the Rio Games. The 22-year-old and his dive partner Dan Goodfellow, 19, claimed bronze in the men's 10-metre synchro event on Monday. The duo faced an agonising wait to find out if they had earned the 85 points needed to pip German team Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein to the podium - and as the scores flashed up on the screen the pair hugged and shared a celebratory splash in the pool.

For Tom, the victory made up for his disappointment at the London 2012 Games when he and then-partner Pete Waterfield took fourth place.

"It was an agonising wait that felt like an eternity," he said afterwards. "We were there and knew we had done a good dive but we didn't know if we had done enough.

This was Tom's only event during the Olympics

"It was just one of those moments where I knew how I would feel if it came up on the scoreboard that we finished fourth, and I knew how I would feel if we finished third.

"We were just waiting and waiting with replay after replay, then all of a sudden the scores came up, I pounced on Dan and I don't think he was quite ready for it, and then before we knew it we were back in for a top bombing seventh dive."

Tom and Daniel have only been diving partners for nine months

Daniel - who has been Tom's diving partner for just nine months, and moved into Tom's London house in the build-up to the Games - said he had tried to "block everything else out and focus".  He said: "I knew our last two are our real big ones and we'd have to nail them".

Cheering the duo on in the diving venue was Tom's mum Debbie and his fiancé Dustin Lance Black, who also tweeted a message of congratulations to the pair. "So proud of you my love!!!" he wrote. "Congratulations @TomDaley1994 & @danngoodfellow!"
