When the queen of reinvention boogied her way back to the top of the charts in a violet leotard and a flicked-back hairstyle that owed more than a little to Seventies star Farrah Fawcett, many of her peers thought she had finally overestimated her own trend-setting potential. Madonna is no regular pop star, however, and it wasn't long before the hip young things of London and New York were wearing cut-off tights and sparkling oversize belts to emulate her latest look.

The 47-year-old continued to take inspiration from retro chic when she chose a vintage-style candyfloss pink gown for the Vanity Fair Oscar-night party. The figure-hugging creation with plunging neckline clearly had its origins rooted in an earlier decade, but with her dance-honed physique and impeccable sense of what works, the Material Girl carried it off with her usual aplomb.

And the veteran performer had clearly been inspired by the past when choosing the outfit in which she picked up her best international female artist gong at the Brit Awards a few weeks beforehand
