Fighting for fish

18 JANUARY 2011

Sales of alternative species of fish have been rocketing in the wake of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Fish Fight campaign and programmes featuring Jamie Oliver, Hugh himself and Gordon Ramsay cooking up fishy treats.

Consumers are shunning their typical purchases of salmon, cod and tuna in favour of coley, dab, squid, mussels and sardines according to a leading supermarket having witnessed a vast wastage of fish stocks in the programme, with reports stating that up to 50% of catches are thrown back dead as fisherman attempt to catch their legal quota.

Sainsbury’s, Tescos , Waitrose and Marks & Spencers have all reported an overall increase in fish and seafood sales, with coley, dab and mackerel jumping up the ranks.

Hugh is leading a campaign to stop the current fishing policies and they are well on their way to a million signatures – head to Fishfight to add your signature to the list.
